Stephen Shrader
Little Things We Forgot We Learned — Readings on culture and intercultural communication for English students in Japan Little Things We Forgot We Learned introduces students to key concepts from intercultural communication. Designed as a “bridge” text between high level language textbooks and “real” undergraduate reading. Appropriate for study abroad preparation and for people who work with English. Care was taken to make it accessible for students with no experience living outside Japan.
What Students Do
• Learn concepts from the field of intercultural communication, as well as the names associated with the theories
• Consider how culture relates to personal identity, and how much of what we think and do is not only personal, but is affected by cultural lessons we learned from others around us
• See how culture is not only about a person’s national background, but that there are many other discourse communities that we participate in
• Gain basic knowledge about qualitative and quantitative research methods, and how research relates to the field of intercultural communication
• Reconsider their understanding of the world by applying concepts and terminology of a specific academic field as a new framework for processing their experience.
